My Island Home

I began drawing the coast of Phillip Island, Millowl, during ‘lockdown’ when we could only travel 5kms from home on limited time. What began as an escape, quickly became an exercise in mindfulness; an arts practice that I continue today. Sitting at the low tide mark, contemplating the shoreline, surrounded by the teeming diversity of this unique natural habitat, I become intimately aware of the beauty and vulnerability of My Island Home; haven to millions of migrating shorebirds; sanctuary for an extraordinary collection of flora and fauna that also call Millowl home. As sea levels rise and climate changes, never has the importance of our thoughtful stewardship been more imperative.

These original ink drawings, created en plein air over many hours, record and map the coastline of Phillip Island from the low tide mark looking back to shore. Each drawing takes approximately 18-20 hours to complete. The work is drawn in archival ink onto watercolour or aged paper. The originals are generally 126cm wide but can vary in size from 100cm to 180cm wide.
