things I learnt in lockdown

its ok to be ordinary

#1 - it’s ok to be ordinary

It’s enough to get up and get to the end of the day with your heart intact, those around you encouraged, your loved ones loved and the people you spoke to respected. It’s enough that you filled your day with small, ordinary things and got to tomorrow having laughed alittle.

#2 - don’t consume your life so quickly

… always onto the next thing….add a little pause; slow it down or you’ll be chasing the new stuff sooner than you need to, packing-it-all-in, ‘chasing after the wind’….

#3 - pause and let your heart swell

Awe and wonder are life’s antidote to cynicism and nihilism; keep moisture in yourself. Find the comedy in life and keep listening to it.

#4 - there’s contentment in the small things

What’s in the cupboard?…the garden?…the street? Grow things, write things, read things, watch things, make things, cook things, love things, smell things; stop consuming, just enjoy and contentment will follow.

#5 - be authentic

If you wear a mask your lens will fog up and you won’t see anything very clearly at all.

#6 - get off of Facebook

Facebook and Instagram stories lack the details that make their authors complex and flawed humans. Faulty frameworks, high expectations and social platforms compare us all and result in disillusionment, dissatisfaction and dysfunction……. just sayin’.

#7 - stop judging yourself

…or you’ll end up judging others with the same critical stick you use on yourself bringing injury to you both.

#8 - try not to cry alone

Let other people love you.And if you weep, pay attention to your tears; their wisedom will lead you to naming your sorrow more accurately, making the direction toward healing and recovery, so much clearer.

#9 - find a rhythm

If you are sad, find a routine that is gentle on yourself and repeat it each day; walk, get into nature; be mindful of colour and sound, textures and smells; prepare fresh food, eat regularly; read a little, rest a little; talk to somebody you love a  little; listen to something beautiful or funny and tomorrow it may be a bit easier.

#10 - lean in to those who love you

Lean in and enjoy their company. Trust them, hold onto them and live generously together in times of scarcity. Bring kindness, respect, generosity and love to yourself, your people, your work and your world; achieving that is extraordinary.
