Lindy Yeates

a humble hum for my lovely mum

a child that's ageless dances

I remember when

the tele hissed -

white noise,

end of broadcast;

when the test-pattern

hummed

and poor reception

made the image

fade in and out;

child on sofa,

waiting for tea.

I remember mum,

kettle hissing,

cup in hand,

end of day;

setting for dinner,

watching for him,

humming a tune,

raising a hymn -

weary out

weary in,

breathing out, breathing in.

I remember mum,

the patient kisses,

prayers and wishes

for quiet hour

at end of day;

for dishes done

and put away;

that gentle prayer,

all tucked up tight -

‘Lights out love’.

Fade to night.

And now you’re done,

reception poorly,

image fading

in and out;

white noise hissing,

laughter missing…

child on sofa -

 where’s that hum?

offering tea,

‘Want one mum?’
