I was invited to work collaboratively with the children of St Peters Early Learning Centre Melbourne. This Centre, inspired by the Reggio Emilia philosophy, champions children as competent and creative thinkers able to make informed aesthetic choices and actively direct their own artistic enquiry.
With this in mind, we began exploring the concept of belonging together; photographs of the children's own homes were used as provocations and the children were encouraged to use memory, observation and imagination as they drew. Next, they recorded details that interested them in and around St Peters church - a building that provided strong community feeling amongst ELC families.
These drawings were transferred onto printing foam and a silkscreen. Each child made multiple prints using a variety of processes. The Belonging project resulted in a large collaborative artwork for display in the foyer of the Early Learning Centre.
